Gu has never received or desired a formal academy training which, in part, enables him to break away from metaphysical questions of art and culture and to turn to a direct confrontation with his own nature. The primal emotional state is Gu's entry into his art making. In 10-30-1999, his installation named after the date of completion, Gu presents his unnerving and humorous look at the basic male/female relationship.
